Meteorologist host for route-based YouTube show (US, freelance contractor, per episode, remote)
Weather on the Way is an iOS and CarPlay road conditions app, that shows weather for points along a driving route at the hour you will be there, so drivers can pick the best time to leave to avoid the storm. We are starting a youtube show that helps make this decision, and we are looking for a person to run and present it.
The show
Every time a storm threatens a major road travel corridor, like I-80 in Wyoming, I-70 out of Denver, I-95, etc... we will quickly publish a short video about it. You will walk the viewer through the storm impacts, timing and risks. You will show how the drive looks Thursday night vs Wednesday morning and advise on which one would be better to take. The video should be around 5-10 minutes and includes graphics and visualizations of the weather.
The audience for this is people who are preparing for a trip (especially if they are more sensitive to weather - motorcyclists, campers, etc) and whose plans are flexible enough to be able to adjust the timing of their trip.
What you will do
- Monitor NWS's Storm Prediction Center and other NWS products against the main Interstate travel corridors and flag when there is a potential for significant impact to travel.
- Deliver a storm episode within 6-12 hours of the storm conditions being apparent, so it's live 24-48h before people leave, to allow them to plan their trip. Record on your own equipment, we will handle editing, thumbnails and titles and posting.
- On quiet weeks with no significant storms, record more general explainer videos, not necessarily tied to current conditions (for example "How to time the I-70 drive in a winter")
- Special episodes for travel around holidays: Thanksgiving and Christmas.
- Lighter schedule in spring and summer.
- You can use episodes in your portfolio, we may cut clips for social and app marketing
Cadence and pay
- Roughly 2 episodes per week December through February, 1-2 per week November and March, weekly/every two weeks for the rest of the year.
- Paid per episode: 400 USD per storm/explainer episode, the Thanksgiving and Christmas specials are 3 episodes each, paid at 500 USD per episode.
- If you also deliver a finished edit, add 150 USD per episode.
- Contract starts in November with the Thanksgiving travel advice series and lasts until end of March, when we would review together and decide if it becomes a year round role.
- Non-exclusive. If you are on air somewhere or run your own channel, you can keep doing that.
Who are we looking for
- A Meteorology or Atmospheric Science degree (even if not yet finished) or broadcast forecasting experience. You can fluently read WPC and NWS products, explain the storm timing, typical weather conditions and deliver engaging and dynamic video.
- Comfortable unscripted on camera, with a map. You have broadcast experience or a professional or personal YouTube channel to showcase.
- Available on short notice on weekdays and sometimes weekends in winter.
- A recording setup with clean audio and video. An ability to screen-record an iPhone or iPad.
- Knowledge of US winter weather, especially around its effect on road travel, road closures and safety.
Nice to have: editing skills, existing audience, regular experience of riding motorcycles or towing.
